Anyone who has ever seen a pipe before knows what the image is supposed to be. The image is a signifier for a Pipe which is the signified. Pipe has mythology behind it that has been created and reified through culture. The Denotation of the image of a pipe is it's literal interpretation, the connotation is what we think it means. The artist of the painting is commenting on hegemony or what creates the ideology behind the pipe. It's saying literally the painting just a few different colors and shades.
